Juninah B (June) is studying agriculture business at Algonquin College, at Perth, Ontario.

June’s story is an interesting one that brought her from Singapore all the way to Ontario. She has a real interest and curiosity about food, farming, and agriculture.

She became interested in growing her own food while living in Singapore. Singapore is a small country made up of concrete jungle urban areas. While living in Singapore, June grew a small garden on her balcony. Along with her garden, she grew an interest in agriculture. During the pandemic, June researched which countries were accepting international students and this path led her to Ontario, Canada. She and her family moved to Canada so that she could study agriculture and business in hopes of being able to return home with the knowledge to foster programs for domestic food production in Singapore.

June says that through her studies she has learned about urban and rooftop farming. She has found interest in hydroponic farming programs in Singapore. Singapore imports nighty per cent of its food and has goals to increase domestic food production and there is upcoming opportunities for Singaporeans in urban farming initiatives, she says.

June has aspirations to one day retire in Malaysia and grow food for her family and produce fresh food for her community.  In the meantime, she hopes to share the knowledge she has gained in agricultural studies so everyone can grow their own vegetables at home. June says that if every household was able to grow their own produce we wouldn’t depend so much on imported food and supply chain issues would not have as much impact on day-to-day living.
