Celebrating 25 years of InVigor hybrid canola

InVigor hybrid canola celebrated an important milestone this year at Ag in Motion at Langham, Sask.

25 years of InVigor meant for a fascinating visual — a walk down memory lane of canola varieties.

Corey Ralph of BASF was on hand at the show to discuss the long list of hybrids that many farmers in Western Canada would be familiar with over the course of the last quarter century. Ralph says it sparked some reminiscing, as well as some great conversations.

“For example, some of the hybrids that we’ve been showcasing over the years is 5440 — one of the fan favourites from the past,” he explains. “We’ve got excellent new innovation coming to the marketplace, but it’s always nice to kind of look back and see some of the old hybrids that we’ve grown in the past.”

Another one of the milestones they highlighted was the InVigor L140P — the first variety with the pod shatter trait, which hit the marketplace in 2014. (Story continues below video)

“It’s revolutionized how growers were harvesting their canola. I could talk about pod shatter for a long time, but whether it be timing for harvest, saving that yield from hitting the ground, that pod shatter trait that BASF has is stopping that pod from shattering and ending up on the ground,” Ralph says.

Although the memory lane trip is fascinating and filled with great information that got InVigor to where they are today, they are excited for the future as well — starting with three new hybrids for 2023.

“The first one is LR354PC. It’s a Liberty Link Roundup/TruFlex stack hybrid. The second hybrid that will be launching in 2023 is Invigor L350PC. There’s excellent standability with this hybrid, little later on the maturity, but seeing really good yield results with this. 8.9 per cent better than our InVigor L340PC,” Ralph explains. “The last hybrid is InVigor L359HPC. So this is a part of our health specialty oil portfolio. Again, it looks really promising, and excited to see it in the future.”
