HR toolkit helps farms and ag businesses navigate hiring, firing, and maintaining staff

If the very idea of hiring a new employee stresses you out, the HR Toolkit offered by the Canadian Agricultural Human Resource Council (CAHRC) might help. What’s more, your general farm organization membership may get you the toolkit free-of-charge.

CAHRC is a national, non-profit organization focused on addressing human resource issues specific to farming and the agriculture industry. Jade Reeve serves as the manager of AgriJobs & AgriSkills with CAHRC and explains that the council serves each facet of the labour decision: from hiring, training, and retention, to skills development of the labour force at large.

The council has also created the HR Toolkit, an in-depth, online resource to help address many of the challenges facing employers in the agriculture industry.

“Each section of the toolkit that focuses on human resource management has an overview. And then right, right away, you see the tools and templates that are available. And then each section has theory walking you through how you would implement those tools and templates, or what resources you would access in terms of provincial legislation or federal legislation,” Reeve says.

Topics have information and explanations, but also templates that you can customize. For example, many aren’t sure how to best write job descriptions ahead of recruiting staff, so there’s a job description template to fine-tune to your farm or ag business’s needs.

Reeve says the Toolkit is robust, thoroughly researched, and easy to navigate. For those who are members of the partner organizations, such as the Ontario Federation of Agriculture, producers simply need to reach out to their organization and ask for the coupon code to access the resource for free.
