Our coverage of Farm Progress Show at Decatur, Illinois continues with a look at New Holland’s BigBaler 340 High Density.
Jordan Milewski, senior brand marketing manager at New Holland says the new packer model product has a three-foot by four-foot chamber size, with a newer rotor design. As a non-cutting product he says it is more mainstream for commercial hay producers and large livestock operations.
“With this product, compared to a conventional large square baler, you can have about 22 per cent more density,” says Milewski, adding that this new model is a step up from the BigBaler plus.
Density of straw versus a hay or straw bale, but in most conditions, the increased density with the new baler is easily achievable and Milewski says that even a 20 per cent increase in density over 100 bales, that’s 20 fewer bales to make, stack, move, and store.
In tough or damp conditions, the BigBaler 340 can handle a diverse range of materials.
“Typically a large square baler, when you shut if off, the plunger will stop against the bale face, which makes it awfully hard to start it,” says Milewski, but the BigBaler 340 has a SmartShift gearbox and the ability to stop the plunger away from the bale face, which is a neat feature to eliminate harsh torque of the tractor at start-up.
Another feature is the Loop Master double tie knotter, which ties the first knot 37 per cent stronger so it’s less likely to fail, which for a high density bale is important to keep it together, says Milewski.
