Federal government launches consultations on next five-year agricultural policy framework

The federal government has formally kicked off consultations on Canada’s next agricultural policy framework.

Agriculture Minister Marie-Claude Bibeau, and Parliamentary Secretary for Agriculture and Agri-Food Neil Ellis, launched the federal process in a virtual event on Thursday.

The framework has traditionally been a five-year federal-provincial-territorial agreement that encompasses most government programs and spending in agriculture, from research to crop insurance.

Currently dubbed the “Next Agricultural Policy Framework,” the new agreement is slated to run from 2023 to 2028, replacing the current five-year $3 billion Canadian Agricultural Partnership (CAP), which expires on March 31, 2023. The previous two five-year agreements were known as Growing Forward and Growing Forward 2.

Several provinces have also launched their own consultations on what the next framework should look like.

Federal, provincial and territorial agriculture ministers are planning to meet in September to establish the priorities for the new agreement. The federal government says consultations will continue through the spring of 2022.
