Learning to lead with Heather Watson

Heather Watson joined Farm Management Canada to work in communications.

Fast forward a few years, and instead Watson is leading a thriving, adaptive organization as its executive director, and has been for over a decade.

As Watson explains, she stepped in to the role not fully knowing what to expect, but that she’s leveraged her strong communications skills to build a strong team, adapt to a changing vision, and going full-on into leadership training, mentorship, and connecting with the farmers her organization serves.

Watson was willing to take the leap to executive director, something she says she wasn’t actually qualified for; but she has grown into the role and credits personal growth and mentorship with helping her excel. She’s also learned so much about herself along the way — including tackling burnout — and has carved out a healthy leadership philosophy built on listening and a pursuit of clarity and excellence.
