Case IH Precision Disk air drill gets an early start on soybeans

With mounting evidence of the benefits of planting soybeans early, CASE IH is touting how its Precision Disk 500T air drill can help expand the planting window for the oilseed crop and increase yield.

One way producers can expand soybean planting windows is by adding a lower-investment, high-efficiency air drill to their operation, says CASE IH seeding equipment marketing manager Trent Nowosad. That’s why he believes the company’s Precision Disk 500T single disk, single-rank air drill is a good fit for soybean growers, especially in Western Canada.

“For years, growers have traditionally prioritized planting corn before soybeans. Recent studies showing the significant benefits of early soybean planting, however, are causing some producers to reconsider their planting practices and plant soybean crops earlier,” says Nowosad. “Adding an air drill to a producer’s operation for soybean seeding can add valuable days to the growing season.”

Studies show that early, uniform emergence has a positive impact on soybean yields. CASE IH points to North Carolina State University research that shows late-emerging soybeans can cost up to US$140 per acre when emergence is delayed by four days.

Nowosad says Precision Disk 500T air drills are designed to deliver the most accurate seed placement in the industry to help plants emerge earlier and more consistently to boost yields. They’re also a lower-investment option to plant soybeans earlier or into tough, no-till seedbeds, he notes.

In this interview with RealAgriculture’s Bernard Tobin, Nowosad discusses the features that make the Precision Disk 500T unique. The drills are agronomically designed with a parallel link row unit. It’s built to efficiently cut through residue, open a uniform seed trench, accurately deliver the seed and close the trench. A single-rank configuration with 15-inch spacing is now available for growers looking for a soybean-specific air drill. (Story continues after the interview.)

Nowosad also discusses CASE IH’s new Precision Air 5 series air carts. The expanded line-up brings increased capacity with two new wide-body, tow-between models. The new Precision Air 3725 offers a capacity of 725 bushels, while the Precision Air 4765 carries 760 bushels.

Each new model features a three-tank design, while the 4765 air cart is also equipped with an auxiliary tank. The new models are available with a hydraulic jack to raise and lower the air cart, making it easy to hook up to the tractor, even when the cart is fully loaded.
