SUMMARY

  • The first 100 days of any presidency are incredibly important and usually filled with action to set the tone for the administration
  • Optimism and energy is high right now. And it seems like they are listening.
  • Hope for common ground and unity. There was some good in the Trump administration for agriculture, and we can build off that
  • Biden has two main priorities for USDA: Number one is the COVID-19 pandemic (and relief), and number two is climate. Trade might be third. Maybe.
  • (Trade is on the radar overall, though, e.g. pipelines, China)
  • Vilsack was a surprising choice for agriculture. Because he served for 8 years. Been there, done that.
  • Could be a benefit, hits the ground the running
  • Becomes a de facto governor of rural issues?
  • Partnering with farmers and ranchers will be a priority
  • Voluntary not mandatory focus
  • What will we see on climate change programs, will the U.S impose a carbon tax?
  • Next Farm Bill will be interesting. And Vilsack may play a larger role, be more hands-on, a more “green” Farm Bill
  • There is definitely some pushback from farmers and from ranchers on some of the party policies. Because they are just too out there!
  • There will likely be compensation for farmers for some climate initiatives
  • EPA and WOTUS discussion (water regulations). There was some relief there, but EPA has not been a friend of renewable fuels (Renewable Fuel Standard)
  • RFS can be a part of the climate change initiatives
  • Trade not aid!
  • Will Biden’s administration be friendly with China?
  • The days of record ad hoc payments are over, Morgan says
  • Farm country and Biden admin: farmers are thankful for strong commodity prices
