How do we close the rural infrastructure gap?

(Kara Oosterhuis/RealAgriculture)

Almost everyone who lives in a rural area is well aware of the challenges with infrastructure and services — from keeping schools open, to attracting and retaining doctors, to building roads and fixing bridges.

Fewer though are likely fully aware of just how far behind their local town or municipality has fallen in keeping up with infrastructure, and the numbers are staggering.

As Carrie Tait, writer for the Globe & Mail, recently explored, some Alberta towns are facing huge infrastructure gaps, some to the tune of $20 million on the to-do list.

In this discussion, Tait joins RealAg Radio host Shaun Haney to talk about how a gap like that builds over time, what happens with those towns in dire straights, and how some municipalities are trying to address the issue.
