Manitoba Crop Alliance assumes cash advance administration

The Manitoba Crop Alliance (MCA) has announced it will be administering federal cash advance payments for Manitoba farmers, assuming a service that had been offered by the provincial corn growers association.

The new multi-commodity group was formed as of August 1, 2020 following the amalgamation of five Manitoba commodity groups, including the Manitoba Corn Growers Association (MCGA).

“MCGA became an APP (Advance Payments Program) administrator in 1981,” notes Jonothan Hodson, director with the MCA and previous Manitoba Corn Growers’ director. “MCGA is proud that the MCA board has made the decision to become an administrator. It provides Manitoba farmers with options if they are considering a cash advance through the Advance Payments Program.”

Under the terms of the federal program, which is also offered by other commodity group administrators, eligible Manitoba farmers will be able to receive short-term loans on over 30 crops, as well as honey. MCA says it plans to issue funds three to five business days after an application is complete.

“Manitoba Crop Alliance will continue to prioritize providing fast, personalized, small town service when farmers apply for and manage their APP cash advance,” says chair Fred Grieg.

MCA says it will report operating expenses and revenue earned by administering the APP, and will share audited financial statements with farmer members. Any surplus will be earmarked to cover future APP operating costs and to improve administration and delivery of the program.

The five groups that have amalgamated under the MCA umbrella are: Manitoba Corn Growers Association, Manitoba Wheat and Barley Growers Association, National Sunflower Association
of Canada, Winter Cereals Manitoba Inc., and Manitoba Flax Growers Association.
