Scoular sells dry bean business to Michigan co-op

The Scoular Company has sold its edible bean business, which includes processing plants in southern Manitoba and the northern U.S., to a farmer co-op based in Michigan.

Cooperative Elevator Co. is expanding its geographic footprint with the acquisition of Scoular’s edible bean operations, which includes processing facilities at Plum Coulee and Morden, Manitoba, and St. Hilaire, Minnesota, as well as receiving stations in Garske and Grafton, North Dakota.

Nebraska-based Scoular says the deal will allow it to focus on its other core businesses.

Founded in 1915, Cooperative Elevator Co. is owned by 1,115 farmers and is headquartered in Pigeon, Michigan. It has 11 locations in Michigan and one in North Dakota.

Financial terms of the deal, as well as the name under which it will operate, have not been announced.

Scoular originally acquired the edible bean business in 2015 when it bought Legumex-Walker Inc.’s special crops enterprise for C$94 million plus net working capital. Legumex-Walker was formed through the merger of Roy Legumex and Walker Seeds in 2011.
