The Canadian Roundtable for Sustainable Beef (CRSB) Council took the opportunity recently to meet face-to-face, hear from a guest speaker, and review achievements of the council to date.
According to Anne Wasko, chair of CRSB, some of the latest highlights include: Harvey’s Canada sourcing certified sustainable beef; Atlantic Beef Products being audited and certified to CRSB standards; and, three further distributors also being audited and approved.
“Long story short,” says Wasko, “you’re going to see more of that Certified Sustainable Beef logo on more products here on both food service and retail.”
Wasko says that though things can change slowly in the business, each quarter is showing more volume, still with higher demand than supply.
“It’s the end user asking for it, so as suppliers, we’re doing what we’re asked to do, so that’s great news.”
According to Wasko, the assessment of sustainability of the beef industry – a report conducted when the CRSB first started – demonstrated the Canadian industry is one of the lowest greenhouse gas emitters.
“We are a leader, those no doubt about it,” she says.
CRSB hopes to do an update of the sustainability assessment in a few years, and in the meantime, will work to support sustainability advancements and continue the momentum of certified sustainable beef.
