Wheat Pete’s Word, May 29: Weather rallies, soil consolidation and increasing seeding rates

This week’s Wheat Pete’s Word tackles some timely topics, such as weed control, soybean management, corn challenges, and applying fusarium.

Have a question you’d like Johnson to address? Or some yield results to send in? Disagree with something he’s said? Leave him a message at 1-888-746-3311, send him a tweet (@wheatpete), or email him at [email protected].

Summary:

  • Did you see the fourth quarter? Nope, not on land. Go Raptors!
  • Holy snappin’, we are in a weather rally, baby! Johnson won’t tell us when to sell, but he does remind us that weather rallies turn around very quickly.
  • Unbelievable rainstorms in Ontario, with huge amounts coming in under an hour. A quick reminder on how significant these storms are in causing erosion, and what we need to do to prevent it.
  • Technical issues update – the last two phone updates were a bit late. We will try to get it up earlier today!
  • Events:
    • Before the Plate – upcoming screenings in Canmore, AB; Huntsville and Waterloo, ON.
    • Drainage Day – a live demonstration in Clinton, ON, June 15.
  • Strip tilling – red clover, starter fertilizer in corn (please consider field trials!).
  • Planting progress update – estimates on per cent planted, a discussion on too early vs too late, soil consolidation.
  • Weed control – the weeds are HUGE.
    • We need proper identification, coverage, and timely applications.
    • Let’s talk chemical applications on soybeans for fleabane, and prostrate knotweed.
    • Spreading atriplex in soybeans can very tough to control.
    • Seeing a second flush in IP soybeans after burndown. Spray again?
    • Please get the Problem Weed Guide and The Pest Manager App.
    • A note on Group 27 herbicides such as Callisto, as there are concerns with some dry edible beans planted the year following application, with grower experience suggesting large seeded types are more susceptible. Darren Robinson’s work shows kidney, cranberry and black beans all suffered.
  • When do we start increasing soybean seeding rate? Shorter season soybeans?
  • Switching corn hybrids.
  • It’s a year not to cut your nitrogen.
  • The proper applications and chemicals to combat fusarium.
