Strong beef exports supported by new deals, removed restrictions

The Canadian beef market is enjoying a record-setting export pace for the first three months of 2019. Last week’s announcement of Japan accepting beef from over-thirty-months of age cattle is a real bonus to an already great bull run.

Fawn Jackson, senior manager of government and international relations for the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association, says that this latest decision by Japan is welcomed and she hopes that other countries will see it as a positive move forward on removing the restriction in their markets, i.e. South Korea.

Jackson says that the implementation of CPTPP has buoyed exports to signatory countries, certainly, but that the cattle industry is still working to keep expanding market options for Canadian beef.

The UK is a potential market, she says, and Europe as a whole holds promise as well. “The market signals are there for us to supply more (beef),” Jackson says, adding that one of the biggest restraints has been the volume of product that meets the European qualifications.
