Canada’s Medical Hall of Fame inducted six new members last week, and one inductee has a major tie to the agriculture world.

Dr. James A. Dosman, known to many as the “father of agricultural medicine in Canada,” was inducted for his many contributions.

Dosman is the founding director of the Canadian Centre for Health and Safety in Agriculture at the University of Saskatchewan (U of S), Canada’s only diversified centre for research, teaching, prevention and service related to agriculture and rural life.

Being a graduate of the U of S, the post-secondary institution calls him an outstanding physician scientist. He is the current president and CEO of Agrivita Canada Inc., a non-profit company he helped form, promoting research, public health and safety in agriculture through the Canadian AgriSafety Applied Research Program.

In his early years, being a specialist in respiratory medicine, he encountered the effects of dust exposure among grain workers, which led to the establishment of a nationwide database supporting research and training.

According to a news release, Dosman led the International Labour Organization’s effort to design an international code, Safety and Health in Agriculture, bringing health care standards to millions of farmers and agricultural workers worldwide.

Dosman is a Distinguished Research Chair at the U of S, and in recent years was named an officer of the Order of Canada as well as, he was inducted into the Saskatchewan Agriculture Hall of Fame.
