On Monday, Alberta Pork released a correction to its announcement from last week about a third and fourth case of porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDv). The third case, announced in the early afternoon on Friday turned out to be a false positive; however, the fourth case, announced in the evening still stands meaning there’s now three confirmed cases of the virus.
Just like the second case of PEDv found last month, details are limited.
The virus causes diarrhea and vomiting in pigs and is highly contagious to the animal. The farm involved in the latest case has stopped movement of all pigs, and full bio-containment has been implemented. The producers remain to work closely with their veterinarian.
Alberta Pork and Alberta Agriculture and Forestry are urging producers to heavily increase their biosecurity at this time and any sudden onset of unusual diarrhea in hogs should be investigated immediately by a veterinarian.
A reminder to pork consumers, PEDv affects pigs but poses no risk to human health. Alberta Pork says this incident has not caused any food safety concerns, and pork products remain safe for consumption.
