From truck driver to public speaker: Meet Katie Dilse

Katie Dilse has infectious enthusiasm that can easily get a room full of people engaged. She’s a farmer, a truck driver, and lives in the least populated county in the United States, so you might not think public speaking would also be added to her long list of duties. But once a person listens, and can see her enthusiasm, one would know why it was the right fit.

The idea of becoming a public speaker grew from volunteering at various conferences by helping with set up or by introducing speakers. As Dilse spent more time on stage, people started to wonder why she wasn’t the one speaking — from there, she decided to step into the public speaking arena.

“I had a wonderful mentor who took me underneath her wing and she taught me all about the business of speaking so that I can share my passion for people and passion for agriculture,” she says.

The saying goes, sometimes a person can’t see the forest for the trees and Dilse says sometimes farmers can’t remember what they loved about farming in the first place. One thing she likes to impress upon farmers is for them to keep prospective in mind.

“I think that we get so caught up in the day-to-day and the mundane and the routine that we forget how cool it is to get to be a farmer,” Dilse says.

“I believe it’s very important to just make sure that we know what’s important to us and keep our eye on that.”
