Agronomics get top billing with New Holland’s precision air drills

New Holland is very excited about its precision air drill line up, having put a tremendous amount of effort into the design, engineering, and also the agronomic implications of this equipment. Will these drills give the seed the best start possible? By putting the agronomic considerations at the forefront of the design and testing, New Holland seems to be fully embracing its Flexi-Coil heritage.

Jason Hardy, global product manager with New Holland, says Flexi-Coil was one of the pioneering companies of tillage and seeding equipment in Western Canada when it was purchased by Case-New Holland (CNH) twenty years ago. CNH actually still produces air drills and several other pieces of equipment in the Flexi-Coil manufacturing plant at Saskatoon, Sask.

The P2082 is a double-shoot disc drill which New Holland has been working on for some time.  “The big part of this row unit was to design it to accommodate a seed boot while also maintaining the disc drill opener as well. So it’s kind of a hybrid combination where we’re putting the fertilizer down through the disc coulter and the seed is being put down through a seed boot in a side-band style application,” says Hardy.

Hardy knows that people are often worried about how much maintenance is required with a disc drill, but he feels they have it covered. “The durability is outstanding,” he says, “There’s only two grease points on the opener itself (that needs done) once a year. Maintenance is nothing unusual. It’s very typical to a standard hoe-drill, but you get all the benefits of the disc drill.”

Hardy is also very excited about the improvements to the P2075 precision drill. “We had a great product previously. We had some concerns on the depth adjustment,” Hardy says, “So, we’ve improved that on this new product. It takes only a couple of seconds to adjust the row unit. No tools required (and) maintenance is basically zero.”
