Fit Farmer, Ep 6: Get back into a routine with an event in mind

Rest and refocus are key to going forward with your fitness plan now that harvest is over. With work slowing down a bit, it’s easy to get out of a fitness routine, but not to worry because with a little effort and planning, you’ll be back in the saddle in no time.

Fit Farmer co-host Gary Chambers says that after you’ve had a solid rest, it’s time to set some short-term goals to go along with those long-term ones.

Co-host Shaun Haney adds, “Be sure to be reasonable with your goals, though, too.”

Chambers agrees. You have to start small and grow from there in order for the routine to fit, he says. Whether that goal is to wake up early and go for a run, or incorporating more vegetables into your diet, baby steps are key.

When setting long-term goals, like running in a “Mud run” event come the summer, for example, Chambers says it’s easy to get side tracked if you think about competing in something that far away, so adding short term goals are needed. Adding that, if you do set a goal, stick to it, but make sure you have a solid health check up prior to training.

“You want to take that holistic approach to your wellness, and that includes diet and frequency,” Chambers says. “If you’re getting a little bit older and you haven’t been exercising, probably a visit to the doctor to get cleared to exercise (is a good idea), and just start off moderate with (something like) walking your dog three days a week, and then move your way up from there.”

Listen below to Haney and Chambers talk about getting back into a fitness routine, how to stick to it, and how to it will improve your overall health.
