Canada’s largest hog production company, with support from the Government of Manitoba, has announced a major new build in western Manitoba.

HyLife Food Ltd. announced today a brand new feed mill will be built in the R.M. of Killarney-Turtle Mountain with the help of tax increment financing (TIF), to the tune of $9.5 million over a 22-year span. There will also be an expansion to its main operation at Neepawa, the company says.

Manitoba’s government have also pledged an additional $2 million for the expansion thanks to funding from a Growing Forward 2 grant, a provincial-federal funding initiative.

Municipal relations minister Jeff Wharton says, “HyLife’s expansion is strengthening our rural economy, creating jobs in the agri-food industry, and enhancing Manitoba’s position as a leader in pork and protein processing.”

HyLife’s CEO, Claude Vielfaure noted his company’s expansion will focus on optimizing its integrated pork production system.  It will also expand the plant to enable a full double shift, improve process flows, allow investments into equipment, grow additional hog supply and integrate incremental feed supply, he says.

The company exports 75 per cent of its production to 23 countries around the world including Japan, China, Mexico, and Russia.
