The University of Calgary just received one of the biggest donations in Canadian university history, to the tune of 19,000 acres.

W A Ranches, just north of Cochrane, will now be known as W A Ranches at the University of Calgary following the donation of the working ranch by Jack Anderson, his daughter Wynne Chisholm, and their families.

“We are gifting the assets of our ranch to the University of Calgary to create a world-leading centre of excellence in beef cattle research,” says Chisholm. “Our hope is that this gift will transform the teaching, learning, and outreach experiences at UCVM.”

As big as that vision is Chisholm hopes for more. “I would like the University of Calgary’s researchers scientists and profs to be our future rock stars. I want them to be the celebrities that people think of and want to talk to when they’ve got questions about where does our food come from?”

Understandably, the university is very excited about this generous donation. “This gift will advance the leadership of our Faculty of Veterinary Medicine even further, providing a unique opportunity for our students to engage in immersive learning, develop their professional skills, and make the connections between human, animal and environmental health,” says U of C President Elizabeth Cannon.
