Canola field events promise learning with an element of carnival

Western Canadian canola growers planning to attend one of three over-the-top canola field days being held this summer are in for a real experience.

I recently sat down with Tracy Broughton, policy and producer relations manager for SaskCanola, to talk about what farmers can expect from the upcoming canolaPALOOZA event.

Farmers can expect the usual field day offerings, of course, like all the newest research information on clubroot, blackleg, and sclerotinia, as well as the Ultimate Canola Challenge and Canola Performance Trials, but Broughten says they want to make the day full of fun, too.

“Over the noon hour we are going to host a game show on All Things Canola Trivia in the tent and we will have some of our movies running…. It is just an opportunity for us and Canola Council agronomists to feature all the newest information that we need to be communicating to farmers in a really fun way,” she says. Attendees can look forward to fun prizes, too.

CanolaPALOOZA is different than many other field days, in that it allows for in-field scouting for blackleg to help farmers understand what they should be looking for, and hands-on experience in determining whether or not they should spraying for sclerotinia, she says.

There are three events being held across Western Canada: June 25 at Saskatoon, SK, June 27 at Lacombe, AB, and July 25 at Portage la Prairie, MB. Find more details for the event nearest you, here.
