A&W to introduce plant-based burger across Canada

A&W Beyond Meat burger (A&W Food Services of Canada Inc.).

A&W has announced plans to be the first national burger chain in Canada to add a plant-based burger to its menu.

The restaurant chain says it will offer “The Beyond Meat Burger” at all its restaurants across Canada starting July 9th.

“We are a burger loving company with a lot of firsts, but this is the fastest new-product launch in our history,” says Susan Senecal, A&W Canada’s president and Chief Executive Officer, in a news release. “When we tried the Beyond Meat Burger we were amazed with how great it tasted and knew we had to be the first national burger chain to bring it to Canadians across the country.”

The company says the patty, which comes from LA-based and celebrity-backed fake meat company Beyond Meat, is made from pulse crops, including peas and mung beans. Beets are used to give the patty a red-meat appearance.

The Beyond Meat Burger will be served with lettuce, tomato, red onion, pickles, ketchup, mustard, and mayo.

A&W Canada says it is Beyond Meat’s largest restaurant partner to-date.

“Our partnership with the iconic A&W brand is a tremendous step forward for Beyond Meat and, correspondingly, consumers who are seeking broader access to healthy and sustainable options for the center of the plate,” says Ethan Brown, founder and CEO of Beyond Meat.

A&W’s main competitor, McDonald’s Canada, told us in December it did not have any plans to introduce a plant-based burger in Canada.
