Ontario planting progress: corn over 90%, soybeans 65-70%

Over 100 farmers from more 30 Ontario counties participated in our ‘roll-call’ on Twitter this past weekend. We asked where they expected to be at with planting corn and soybeans by Sunday evening.

Most regions have planted their intended corn acres except regions south of London and the Niagara/Haldimand clay, with some only starting to plant over the weekend. Overall, 90% of the corn crop was planted as of Sunday night, and tires are rolling to finish a good chunk of that last 10% this week.

Eastern Ontario had a cooperative stretch of weather where farmers completed planting both soybeans and corn in a planted in a matter of weeks, according to the participants. (I know what you are thinking: Eastern Ontario gets the good corn basis and weather, how is that fair?!).

Overall, soybean progress is mixed. Central south-west Ontario is nearly wrapped up from Northern Oxford to Wellington. Like corn, the clay regions of southwest Ontario remain behind.

Thanks to everyone who participated, and to our sponsor, Pride Seeds. Be sure to keep an eye out on Twitter for the next ‘roll-call’.
