What’s new for herbicides in Ontario for 2018

Planting is just around the corner, and if you’re in full-on crop planning mode you’re likely curious about what’s new, what’s old, what’s repackaged, what’s the best bet for herbicides in 2018.

Lucky for you, Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs weed management specialist Mike Cowbrough faces an avalanche of these questions every spring as farmers sort through herbicides options for the coming crop season.

Every year there are new brands and new actives that tout the ability to stamp out hard-to-control-weeds, add to the weed-resistance management arsenal, or just do a better job than existing products. But — buyer beware — there are many recycled and repackaged products that have little new to offer other than convenience. All the new brands and co-packs can even confuse an expert like Cowbrough.

To help sort through the puzzle, RealAgriculture asked Cowbrough to make some notes and help us navigate through the new herbicide offerings for corn, cereals, and soybeans for 2018.

In this video, Cowbrough also notes that farmers can get a full run-down of new herbicides in the Pest Manager App.
