Plant-based “meat” is gaining a new level of mainstream presence, as McDonald’s is planning to debut a vegan burger in Europe next week.
The McVegan will be added to the menu in Sweden and Finland on December 28th, after testing in a limited number of Finnish restaurants this fall.
Produced by Anamma, a subsidiary of Swedish company Orkla Foods, the McVegan will be made in Sweden with soybean protein as its main ingredient.

Anamma’s website says it sources non-GMO soy protein from the U.S. and Europe.
A spokesperson for McDonald’s Canada says the company doesn’t have any plans to introduce a vegan burger in Canada, “though, we are always inspired by other McDonald’s markets around the world and look for new flavours and menu items for our Canadian guests to enjoy.” The restaurant chain notes its salads can be ordered without meat and McDonald’s fries in Canada are vegetarian-friendly.
