As the NAFTA negotiations enter the third round of talks in Ottawa, the agriculture community in all three countries is nervous. We have heard “do no harm” so many times from famers and ranchers in all three countries that you’d think it should have penetrated into the minds of the negotiating teams.
The White House has shared much rhetoric and threatened all-out termination, but inside the negotiation room, the mood and discussion will be calmer and more focused.
Round three of the talks will come with more detail, and the agriculture sector in all three countries will be on pins and needles to see if negotiators follow their “do no harm” request. Agriculture is on the agenda for Tuesday and Wednesday.
The Canadian Federation of Agriculture (CFA) is one of the organizations will be on the ground in Ottawa over the weekend and the beginning of the week. This week Shaun Haney talked to president Ron Bonnett of CFA about what they expect out of round three of the NAFTA talks.
