New Deere 5R Tractors Carry the Load in Tight Spaces

John Deere has leveraged technology from some of its larger tractors to increase operator comfort, tractor manoeuvrability and visibility in its new 5R Series tractors.

The tractors where unveiled last month at the 2017 National Farm Machinery Show in Louisville, Kentucky. Product manager Chris Lammie explains that the tractors, which range from 90 to 125 horsepower, are a good fit for working inside barns because they pair a 7.4-foot wheelbase with a 60-degree steering angle to provide a tight turning radius of 12.1 feet.

In this video, Lammie explains that shifting is virtually effortless with two fully electronic transmission options, CommandQuad Manual and Command8. Using a multi-range selection, the operator can toggle from B range through D range without stopping. “Base equipment also includes AutoClutch, leveraged from our larger row-crop tractors. That means no clutching is necessary, ever. Step on the brake and the clutch automatically disengages.”

Lammie says Deere designed the new 5R to be the premier loader tractor. It can be equipped with the company’s new 540R loader, which features an automatic mast latch, single-point hydraulic connection, remote implement latch and self-leveling links. To improve loader operation, a mechanical or electro-hydraulic loader joystick option is integrated into the swivel seat. Gearshift buttons and a joystick reverser are built into the loader joystick control. “Its simple one-handed operation lets you control loader, speed, and direction, all without letting go of the joystick,” says Lammie.

A new panorama roof increases upward visibility by 80 percent compared to a John Deere 5M Tractor. Forward visibility is seven percent better thanks to a single-piece front windshield, making for easier loader operations.
