Wheat Pete’s Word, Feb 1: New Crop Experiments, Population Plans, and N Rates on Oats

We’re kicking off February with a correction — no, that wasn’t Greg Stewart in the production guide you saw last week, it really was your Wheat Pete’s Word host Peter Johnson.

Captioned as “Greg Stewart” in the Corn, Soy, Wheat Handbook

This week, Johnson covers a whole lot of ground, including a reminder to check on your tiled fields to help identify broken tiles, a caution about growing faba beans, and a reminder to plan ahead if you’re thinking of trying a new crop, such as quinoa or faba beans.

We also get to hear some follow up points about pea-canola (peaola) intercrops, disease suppression in mixed crops, and a big ol’ question of WHY would you grow oats as nothing but a forage crop?

And because there have oodles of questions about row widths, light interception, and weed control, Johnson delves deeper into this narrow vs. wide row discussion (even when talking silage!).

Don’t forget to send Peter your questions and comments! Leave a message at 1-888-746-3311, send him a tweet (@wheatpete), or email him at [email protected].
