Corn School: Grain Drying Tips With Helmut Speiser, Part 1

Grain drying guru Helmut Speiser teaches Peter Johnson a few things about how to dry corn successfully.

Real Agriculture agronomist Peter Johnson is overwhelmed by the number of corn drying questions he’s getting from farmers. We decided it was high time we put together answers to some of the most frequently asked questions in regards to safe drying of corn.

In Part 1 of our Corn School grain drying video series, Johnson enlists help from Ontario’s drying guru Helmut Speiser to provide tips on what farmers need to know before they dry grain.

With excellent drying conditions in Ontario this fall Speiser says much of the corn is close to the moisture content growers want and many may opt to go directly to the bin and bypass the dryer. But if farmers are going directly to the bin there are a number of things to consider. In this situation, farmers will need a clean sample, they must remove the fines as much as possible, ensure they have enough air to get the job done and understand the equilibrium moisture content.
