Wheat Pete’s Word, Sept. 14: “Live” From Canada’s Outdoor Farm Show

It’s a special edition of the Word this week, as Peter Johnson, our resident agronomist at RealAgriculture, hosted his weekly agronomy discussion live at Canada’s Outdoor Farm Show on Tuesday. It was a chance to have Wheat Pete answer your questions in-person, whether talking about his first-love crop, fall weed control or the nutrients in soybean and corn residue.

Watch, listen or download below! And of course, if you have a question for Peter for next week, call 1-888-746-3311, send him a tweet (@wheatpete), or email him at [email protected].

And if you’re at the show, and missed the live taping on Tuesday, the Wildman will be back at the PRIDE Seeds booth at 1 p.m. Thursday for another hour-long Q and A session (which we also plan to post here on RealAg.)

Highlights:

Big Yields = Better Soils?

  • Big yields put more organic matter back into the soil.
  • Soybeans don’t leave much residue.
  • Need to spread residue out evenly for uniform growing conditions for subsequent crop.

Fall Weed Control

  • Fall weed control after soybeans — not spraying herbicides in fall is one of the biggest missed opportunities in Ontario ag. Get better control with glyphosate on weeds like sow thistle and fleabane.

Potash Deficiency

  • Starting to see potash deficiency in more crops — comes back to good residue spread with combines following the same A-B line…

Soybeans

  • Soybeans fix N but use more than they fix. Bigger yields = more nitrogen that needs replacing.

And more…

  • Corn following soybeans requires less nitrogen than corn following corn because it’s not used to break down corn residue.
  • Burdock control
