Saskatchewan-based AGT Food & Ingredients and North Dakota-based JM Grain are two of the first companies to sign on to use a new ‘Made with Pulses’ food packaging label unveiled by the Global Pulse Confederation in Chicago on Monday.
With the launch coinciding with the UN’s International Year of Pulses, the new seal and Pulse Brand are intended to help consumers easily identify foods that contain peas, beans, lentils and chickpeas.
“The ‘Made with Pulses’ seal gives companies the unique opportunity to tie their products to the momentum pulses are gaining as healthy, nutritious and sustainable ingredients that fit with today’s lifestyle and taste preferences,” explained Daria Lukie, Pulse Brand Manager for the Global Pulse Confederation, the non-profit organization that represents the international pulse industry value chain. “The Pulse Brand provides shoppers with an easy way to identify products that are good for people and good for the planet.”
The Confederation says several global companies, including those mentioned above, have shown strong interest in the brand, crediting the early adoption to pulses’ “halo of health, value and quality.”
The first packages with the new ‘Made with Pulses’ seal are expected to appear in grocery stores before the end of 2016.
Pulse Canada represents the Canadian pulse industry as a member of the Global Pulse Confederation. Several companies that buy and sell pulses in Canada are also members.
