Wheat Pete’s Word, June 15: The Year of No Forgiveness

It’s the Year of No Forgiveness. Apologies to those who didn’t get that “perfect rain” and are still hoping for more. As for that slow-growing alfalfa stand: have you checked for weevils? And how about your canola? Have you scouted for cabbage seedpod weevils yet?

Peter Johnson, resident agronomist for RealAgriculture, stresses the importance of scouting, marketing, weed control, and so much more, in this week’s episode of the Word.

Highlights

  • The Year of No Forgiveness continues.
    • Not everybody got that “perfect rain”…
    • Check for alfalfa weevil!
    • We need more rainfall for the wheat!
    • We have huge marketing potential right now. Pay attention to 2017 wheat. Some of it’s up over $6/bu. Have soybeans and corn? Sell some!
  • Canola ALERT
    • Lots of cabbage seedpod weevil. Remember, spray those products late in the evening so we’re not affecting any pollinators.
  • It’s time to make some white mould decisions.

  • Edible Beans
    • Seeing millipedes taking out edible bean stands, with ten or more millipedes per plant.
    • Group 15 injury showing up, and in some cases, plants took up so much that they might need to be replanted. Injury symptoms are much different than on soybeans. On edible beans, cotyledons and unifoliates drop off, and first trifoliate 1/10th the size, often off-colour.
  • Corn
    • Fertilizer burns in fields where broadcasting and incorporating fertilizer. In many fields, got to 3 or 4 leaf corn, and seeing root pruning after rain. We have to figure out a better way to manage that fertility
    • Nitrogen test results coming back. It looks like our average nitrogen in the soil is at the low end of the range.
    • For the grower’s who are streaming 28% on 5-, 6-, 7-leaf corn — ouch!
    • Some weird symptoms on leaves. In some cases, we’re seeing enough of a cold temperature injury that the plant’s leaf was weakened and hit by winds.
    • Remember those corn plants with roots but no shoots? It might also be a result of cold temperatures…
  • Weed Control
    • How do I know how much Turbocharge to add to Reflex?
    • Coverage is crucial for contact herbicides. So is the size of the weeds.
    • Why did the clover in my wheat germinate then disappear?
