RealAgriculture is excited to announce that we’re partnering with the Canadian Agriculture Safety Association (CASA) to raise money to build a grain entrapment unit and training program.
Moving grain can entrap a grown adult in less than 25 seconds. In 2015, there were seven grain entrapment fatalities in Canada, and four of those were children. First responders and farmers need to be properly trained for situations like this.
First Grain Entrapment Training Program in Canada
There are 10 grain entrapment training units in the United States, and based on the amount of stored grain on farms, it is unacceptable that this kind of training is not available in Canada.
Organizations like Crop Production Services, Alberta Canola Producers Commission, Saskatchewan Canola Development Commission, Manitoba Canola Growers Association, Red Deer County, and Manitoba Ag Days have already stepped up with money. We feel strongly that the RealAgriculture community will see the benefit in a grain entrapment unit and training. In order to enable the completion of the trailer, we need your help to reach our fundraising goal of $50,000 to get the training unit built.
The Grain Entrapment Unit
The unit is on a 26-28 foot trailer, equipped with two grain bins and transfer augers to simulate what happens when someone is in a bin or truck and the grain starts to move. The unit will be used to teach first responders how to stop grain movement, and complete a timely rescue.
The trailer will have cameras on board, enabling people not involved in the training session to follow along. Monitors will also be used to show video about other hazards and control strategies.
In addition to the grain entrapment unit, a smaller, trade show display will also be built for smaller venues. It will use videos and interactive displays to present information related to grain entrapment prevention and rescues. Plans are also in place to develop at least three tabletop displays for presentation to school groups and other youth events.
Finally, CASA will be developing a web-based resource with much of the above information. The organization will offer downloadable checklists and toolbox-talks for producers to go through with their family and employees.
