Consultations Starting on Next Ag Policy Framework

The federal agriculture minister has launched online consultations on what Growing Forward 3 — or whatever name the Liberals give the next agricultural policy framework — should look like.

Growing Forward 2, which encompasses most federal and provincial programs for agricultural research, market development and business risk management, expires on April 1st, 2018.

Lawrence MacAulay, on Monday, announced the launch of this website designed to collect feedback and ideas to “better understand where GF2 is working well, and where challenges could be addressed.”

“I will continue to consult with stakeholders from across the country as we work in partnership with provincial and territorial governments to develop the next policy framework. These open and transparent consultations with Canadians will help shape the direction of future policy and programs to meet this objective,” said the minister. “My goal is to help the agriculture and agri-food sector be more innovative, safer and stronger.”

Growing Forward 2, the five-year framework launched in 2013, includes $2 billion in 60:40 federal-provincial cost-shared programs and $1 billion for federal initiatives. In addition, the GF2 business risk management suite, which includes AgriInsurance (eg. crop insurance), AgriStability, AgriInvest and AgriRecovery, has provided over $4 billion in demand-driven safety net funding to producers.
