Early last week, leaders from the Canadian Roundtable for Sustainable Beef (CRSB) met with Earls Restaurants to discuss sustainable sourcing. By mid-week, the company announced it had made a mistake.
“I think it was unfortunate that it happened in the first place,” Fawn Jackson, executive director of the CRSB, told Shaun Haney in an interview, “but we’re really happy to see Earls return to sourcing Canadian and to commit to better engage in the Canadian sustainability discussion.”
Or check out the podcast options at the bottom of this post.Touted as “the go-to forum on sustainable beef,” the CRSB is a multi-stakeholder initiative aimed at advancing sustainability efforts in the beef industry.
Beyond benchmarking sustainability through an assessment of the Canadian beef industry (expected this fall), the CRSB is also developing framework to enable verification of the overall sustainability of individual operations and processing plants.
The indicator development phase is still underway, but, Jackson explained in the interview that “not using antibiotics or growth promotants should not be confused with sustainability assurances or marketing”.

Overall, Jackson is positive that the public’s response since the initial Earls announcement speaks to a trust in Canadian beef.
