Fertilizer Canada and the Canadian Association of Agri-Retailers (CAAR) launched a new online anhydrous ammonia safety course for farmers in conjunction with the kickoff of Canadian Ag Safety Week.

The official launch for CASW, which runs March 13-19, was held in Vineland Station, Ontario on Tuesday.

“Fertilizer Canada is taking significant steps to manage the risk of fertilizer, from facility to farm gate. We work directly with agri-retailers and farmers to ensure the safe handling and storage of fertilizer products. With the launch of another Safety and Security eLearning course, Fertilizer Canada is contributing to the vision of zero accidents,” said Giulia Brutesco, Senior Director of Industry Standards at Fertilizer Canada.

Delaney Ross Burtnack, president and CEO of CAAR, noted the ag retailer organization’s “mandate is to continue working with industry stakeholders who share our commitment to enhancing the knowledge and safety of agri-retailers and their farmer customers across Canada.”

The course is complementary to the Transportation of Dangerous Goods certification that CAAR and its retailers offer for farmers. (TDG certification is required every three years.)

Fertilizer Canada also has a Code of Practice that applies to the transportation, storage and on-farm use of anhydrous. The on-farm portion of the code is voluntary.

Retailers and farmers can take the new course for free on Fertilizer Canada’s website using the promo code “AgSafety”.
