Enlist Duo Herbicide Remains Available in Canada

Dow AgroSciences’ new Enlist Duo herbicide remains available in Canada after the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s move to withdraw its registration this week, according to Dow AgroSciences Canada.

“Enlist Duo continues to be available in Canada for its registered uses,” said a statement from the company on Wednesday. Dow also expects the EPA will issue a new U.S. approval before the 2016 growing season.

With 2,4-D in choline form and glyphosate as active ingredients, Enlist Duo was registered in Canada in 2013 and received initial approval in several states from the EPA in 2014.

According to court documents, the EPA decided to vacate the registration after receiving new data on the “potential synergistic effects between the two ingredients on non-target plants.”

The agency will now evaluate the information to determine whether a new registration can be issued, and, if so, whether additional terms and conditions would be required.

“We believe the questions that have been raised about any potential synergy between 2,4-D choline and glyphosate can be promptly resolved in the next few months, in time for the 2016 crop use season,” said Tim Hassinger, Dow AgroSciences President and CEO, in a statement.

“It’s possible that we could see some changes to use conditions on the existing Enlist Duo label,” Hassinger continued. “However, based on the ongoing dialogue with EPA, we do not expect these issues to result in the long-term cancellation of the Enlist Duo product registration. We continue to prepare for commercial sales of Enlist Duo for the 2016 growing season…”

The herbicide is part of the Enlist Weed Control system that combines 2,4-D and glyphosate tolerance in corn and soybeans. It’s also registered in Canada for pre-seed and pre-emerge weed control in spring and winter varieties of wheat (including durum), barley, rye and field corn.
