MB Wheat & Barley Grower Group Set for First Election

Following the end of the Canadian Wheat Board’s single desk in 2012, new producer organizations were formed to lead market development and research for wheat and barley in Western Canada.

In Alberta, the soft wheat and winter wheat commissions joined to form the new Alberta Wheat Commission, while the already-established Alberta Barley Commission assumed some new responsibilities. The Saskatchewan wheat and barley development commissions were both incorporated in 2013, while Manitoba’s joint wheat and barley grower association was launched in 2014. The new Manitoba group is now ready to hold its first director elections at the CropConnect conference in Winnipeg later this month.

As part of the interview below, Don Dewar, Dauphin-area farmer and interim chair of the Manitoba Wheat and Barley Growers Association, describes some of the challenges in forming a “fledgling organization in a mature industry,” as well as the decision to become a member in Cereals Canada and the Barley Council of Canada.

Nominations for three director positions can be made up to and at the MWBGA’s first annual general meeting on February 18th at the Victoria Inn in Winnipeg.
