Ruminating with RealAg — Ep 6: Shedding Light on Near Infrared Technology

Near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy is widely used in research today. In medicine, NIR assists in non-invasive assessments of the brain, blood glucose levels and oxygen concentration in muscles. For agriculture, NIR is largely used in determining the quality of feedstuffs, as it’s quick and relatively inexpensive.

RelatedNIR Workshop Offers Beef Producers Another Way to Improve Feed Efficiency

In this Ruminating With Realag podcast, we re-visit interviews done by RealAgriculture’s Jason Storeve at the workshop held in March with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) entitled: Near infrared Technology and Other Approaches to Lower Feed Cost in Beef Cattle Production. Jason spoke to both Andy Hardy from Oklahoma State University and Larissa Jancewicz with AAFC. You’ll learn all about some of the ways NIR is being used to assess grain quality and determining ration formation to how it can be use to judge an animal’s feed efficiency in digesting that product. Enjoy!
