Canola School: The How & Why of Monitoring Bin Temperature & Moisture

Oilseeds are riskier to store. That’s just a fact, and canola is no different. In fact, the higher the oil content — a plus for the canola crop — is also a liability when it comes to safe storage.

In the last Canola School, Keith Gabert, agronomy specialist with the Canola Council of Canada, went over some storage strategies and tips to limit bin losses of canola. Building on that, in this episode Gabert demonstrates proper bin probing technique and discusses the limits of probing. Moving on to monitored bins, Gabert discusses the options for bin sensors, the importance of not just temperature monitoring but also moisture levels and notes some major red flags farmers can’t ignore if you’re going to avoid major storage wrecks.
