Ag Canada Earmarks $15 million for Canola Industry Funding

Gerry Ritz was on hand at Richardson’s Kelburn Farms, just south of Winnipeg, today to announce a federal government commitment of $15 million to the canola industry. This funding, through Growing Forward 2, will be leveraged to bump that total to more than $20 million, says Patti Miller, president of the Canola Council of Canada (seen below), also on hand at today’s event.

This funding will support canola projects under seven themes, the Canola Council says. They are: oil nutrition, canola meal nutrition, canola health and integrated pest management, canola yield and quality optimization, integrated crop management and sustainability of canola produciton, canola supply surveillance and forecasting and, finally, science cluster tech transfer.

Lyndsey Smith, editor of spoke with Curtis Rempel, VP of crop production with the Canola Council of Canada to ask why types of projects farmers can expect to see funded under this Growing Forward 2 initiative. In the interview above, Rempel also explains the role the buzz word “sustainability” plays in the market now.
