Armyworm Scouting in Wheat: Where, When & How

They’re back!

While it’s a bit early to be alarmed about armyworm feeding, early is also the prime time to be scouting for this leaf chewer. Armyworms start out very small (which happens to be the best time to control them) and like to feed in the evenings, so if you’re doing most of your crop scouting in the heat of the day, you may not realize just how high populations have climbed.

In this video, Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs cereal specialist Peter Johnson explains what stage the armyworm population is at now, how to identify the feeding damage, what time of day to scout and where on the that plant and in the field this insect likes to hide. Johnson adds a few details about aphids as well, so be on the look out for those too.
