Manitoba Crop Report: Growing Degree Days a Fraction of Average

While seeding is in full swing in most of Manitoba this week, last week’s crop report (found here) doesn’t fully explain current conditions. The weather report, found here, contains more interesting information — specifically about growing degree day (GDD) accumulation.

GDD accumulation is sitting somewhere in the 50th percentile for much of Manitoba. Some areas are down in the low 40s, like Altona and Somerset, while further west, like Gladstone and Portage, are averaging closer to 60% of average.

A warm weather forecast for this week will certainly help catch some of these numbers up, but rain is also forecast for many areas. There numbers will be important for factoring in to crop development, weed removal timing, disease scouting and more.
