Social Media & the Modern Farmer — Connecting with Consumers

There are some big shifts in technology that happen that force you to move into the future. Look at television. The shift to digital forced a lot of old stalwarts to take a drive into town and look at some options or risk missing Hockey Night in Canada. Being content with rabbit ears was no longer an option and there was suddenly a whole new world in front of them and a big adjustment to make.

Now consider social media. At first glance it may not seem like an essential part of your farm, in fact, you can operate just fine without it. It’s the bigger picture that you should be considering. We really do live in an information age now. It’s now a hostile environment of competing information streams looking to be heard. With so much information to wade through, it’s now a matter of sorting through a lot of garbage to find out what’s real, what’s credible and what’s true. People now need to hear it from the horses mouth. That’s where you come in.

In this new world where everyone is talking, at times, they may be talking about you and your business. If you don’t join the conversation, someone else, someone less informed and involved than you are will tell your story for you. In this new world, no one is an island. Perception can become reality pretty quick. Taking to social media to tell your story may take a little more effort than switching from analog to digital TV, but the stakes can also be much higher.

In this video taken at the Western Canadian Dairy Seminar, Sarah Weigum talks to Christina Crowley of Holstein Canada about social media and how important it is that farmers join the conversation.
