Why Standability Matters When Choosing a Canola Variety

Harvest management and timing is always important, but for a shatter-prone crop like canola, it’s paramount to preserving yield in the field and the swath. As canola acres have jumped, so to has the rush at harvest to try and swath and harvest all of the acres at the optimum timing. That can prove a real challenge, but choosing varieties that stand up well and are easy to swath is one way to manage the hectic harvest season.

RealAgriculture.com caught up with Ryan McCann, Viterra’s seed sales manager, at Saskatoon’s Crop Production Show, to talk about how excellent standability allows for flexibility at harvest and what’s in the pipeline for Viterra’s next canola varities.
