Jay Peterson of Frontier, in Saskatchewans southwest corner, sent in some images of how the crop is progressing there. Seeding started in late April with mustard. The lentils pictured here went in on May 13. There are three images: lentils (small red, Maxim Clearfield variety), and the other is mustard.
Jay had this to say about the growing season so far this year:
Seeding went well for us this year with only one minor mechanical breakdown. Two of the biggest challenges we faced were getting to know what seeding was like on some new land. It was tough to keep way ahead of the burn-off because of all the random cold nights we were getting. It was hard to tell when the weeds were going to uptake properly to get the job done well. Though I think we got a little lucky in that area and it all seemed to work out. The cold conditions including a skiff of snow (in late May) have kept the crops from progressing as they should and they are probably about 5 to 7 days behind where I think they should be. The mustard should be bolting here within a couple of days though I think I said that five days ago. The winter wheat is starting to head out (as of June 6). Our durum is just going into flag leaf and the lentils are about 2 inches tall — somewhere around the 2nd and 3rd node stage I think. Other than that conditions are good and one more good rain should get us to an average crop. We just need some heat to keep things going.
