Variable rate technology has huge implications for the efficiency and productivity on the farm. Data collection and monitoring are key components in the application of that technology. Knowing the composition of your fields, the structure of your fields as what went into those fields is the information that makes VRT technology benefit your farm by putting what you need where you need it in your field.

One of those key inputs that has the potential to be better managed is water. A hinderance to that management is proper data collection. Soil moisture data has to be accurate and reliable in order to be properly controlled and beneficial. Too much water can cause leeching of nitrogen and other nutrients. Too little water can affect development at critical times. Knowing when to top dress and when to irrigate are critical issues for proper water management.
That’s where Aqua Check comes in. Aqua Check is a system of in-field probes that constantly monitors soil moisture at various depths throughout the day and sends that information to the farmer so he can properly utilize and manage his irrigation or make better incrop input decisions. I spoke to Brad Rathje of Aqua Check about their product at the 2011 Farm Forum Event.
