Wheat School – Dealing with Wild Oats – Rob Klewchuk, Syngenta

In this episode of the Wheat School, we head to Regina to talk with Syngenta Technical Field Manager Robert Klewchuk about control strategies for wild oats. Wild oats act as scavengers in your wheat stand. They can steal valuable nutrients from your crop, affecting yields and crop development. While a pre-seed burn has been effective in controlling some wild oats, weather conditions have decreased the effectiveness of that strategy. With the cooler spring conditions across most of the prairies, the emergence of wild oats and other grassy weeds was later than a lot of chemical applications could cover. Now, as we begin to see an increase in heat units, wild oats are starting to become more of an issue.

That emergence could not come at a worse stage for the wheat stand. If not managed in a timely and effective manner, the wild oats can steal nitrogen and other nutrients from the wheat plant, affecting proper growth and development and negatively impacting yield. I spoke with Rob about some strategies for dealing with wild oats, (and mosquitoes) in a farmers field just outside of Regina.
