The Misunderstandings of “Local Food” and What it Really Means

Food has become pretty trendy. We have now have two Food Networks on cable and the growth of Farmers Markets has been strong in North America. One of the most misinterpreted terms is “Local Food.” What is local food?

Seems like a pretty simple question. You would think that such a simple term would never be mis-marketed or misunderstood. Well this is simply not true. One of the most common mistakes is the assumption that local means organic. Another misunderstandings is that the term local is really a self defined term. As Paul Knechtel, President of 100 Mile Market discusses in the video below, people can define local food as food produced within the same county, the same province, within 100 miles or within Canada.

As you can expect this can create a lot of confusion at the consumer level. At the SouthWest Agricultural Conference I talked to Paul from 100 Mile Market about some of these misconceptions of local food and how all areas of agriculture can participate in this recent consumer trend.
